HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE
To take care of your skin, the first thing you need to know is your specific skin type and how it adapts to certain circumstances or seasonality.
The skin is the largest organ in the body, as complex and intelligent as other vital organs. Using very harsh cleansers and treatments, even if they are recommended for excessive oiliness, can send a signal to your skin that more oil is really needed.
On the other hand, applying moisturizers that are too thick or heavy can result in decreased natural oil production, resulting in even drier skin.
Knowing your skin's specific needs will help you choose the right options that will balance your skin, resulting in a healthier, more radiant complexion.
Each person's skin is unique, but there are some types. Common ones that your skin will identify with more.
The three main skin types are commonly referred to as Oily, Combination and Dry.
Here are two easy ways to determine your skin type at home:
THE CLEAN FACE METHOD
Clean your face thoroughly with a gentle cleanser. Gently dry. Leave your skin clean (Do not apply additional moisturizers, serums or treatments, nothing). After 30 minutes, examine your cheeks, chin, nose and forehead for any shine.
After another 30 minutes, assess whether your skin is dry, especially if you smile or make other facial expressions.
-
If your skin feels tight, your skin is probably dry.
-
If there is a noticeable shine on your nose and forehead, your skin is probably combination.
-
If there is shine on your cheeks in addition to your forehead and nose, you probably have oily skin.
THE PAPER METHOD KILLS BLOT
This method is much faster and is often an excellent differentiator between oily and dry skin types. Gently pass the paper over different areas of your face. Hold the sheet up to the light to determine how much oil is visible.
-
If the leaf picked up little or no oil, you probably have dry skin.
-
If a sheet reveals oil on the forehead and nose areas, your skin is combination.
-
Finally, if the paper is saturated with oil, it is very likely that you have oily skin.
